So tradition still stands, Ive managed to see every Star Wars film from my era to hit the silver screen on opening day, though I have to admit, there wasn't really a line for this one. Which in itself is a real shame because the movie was great! I don't think people realize that George Lucas didn't write or direct this one. He's gone the Gene Roddenberry route and has become an "executive advisor to the series". So it wasn't shit is what Im trying to come across with here.
Despite not having a 'traditional' Star Wars opening this one was still riveting and gave me an immediate flash back to the old space serials I was forced to watch as a young boy. It opens with a narration catching us up to speed on whats happened so far, then within the first few minutes we are neck deep in an explosive battle somewhere on the outer rim where(even though they arent master and apprentice anymore) Obi-Wan and Anakin are fighting side by side.
I have to say the battle sequences are really intense. Like more than Episode III intense. Clone Troopers with their heads getting blown off, kamikaze runs on battle cruisers, shit you havent seen in Star Wars before! Still no blood and no mass mutilation of a persons body yet so thats why its quoted by Lucas as a high end PG series. And the reason they can get away with it is because its animated. Dont forget that.
On the other side of the playing field, however, it still had some heavy humor in it. Mostly in the battle droids. More than once the audience fell to laughter when the droids did something outrageous. I would have to say the humor and violence was leveled out fairly evenly and didnt get in the way of the plot which is always good.
Yes, YES! There was a plot, and a story. And fuck me it was a good one too! Well sort of. I have to admit in the some twenty-five years since Return of the Jedi hit theaters we have not once had a mention of Jabba having a son in any Expanded or Canon Universe, but hey, what the fuck, eh? Im willing to give a little lenience on that fact only because they played it out well.
While the main plot of the movie was find and rescue Jabbas son, the sub plot of the movie was seeing how well Anakin takes to having an apprentice of his own. Again they kind of come out of the blue with this character, never once mentioning her before in anything but like I said it only works because they played it well. And seeing Anakin get a dose of his own medicine was more than rewarding.
Overall I enjoyed the film. Not Emmy winning, but good enough to satisfy my imagination for the weekend. I even plan on seeing it again if I get the chance. I recommend film to any viewer, and any fan. If you give it a chance you may find you actually like it.
